Acousticon equips MBPJ Civic Centre with Harman

MALAYSIA: Acousticon Sdn Bhd recently installed a Harman sound reinforcement system into the auditorium of the Petaling Jaya Civic Centre. Equipment for the installation was supplied by Mahajak Trio Electronic Sdn Bhd, with the project forming the third major renovation to take place since the building’s construction in the 1970s.

The site is owned and operated by the city council, Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya (MBPJ), which opted to upgrade the audio system as a growing number of clients were beginning to hire in their own. Complaints that they were receiving included a lack of input connections, poor sound quality, and insufficient coverage under the balcony area - as the majority of the existing ceiling speakers were malfunctioning. 

To increase the input count, Acousticon installed a 32-channel Soundcraft Si Performer 3 digital desk to replace the ageing analogue console. This was connected to a Soundcraft Mini stagebox 32, providing a total of 64 input channels – 14 of which would be dedicated to Sennheiser EM 100 G3 wireless mic systems.

A BSS Blu-100 digital signal processor with Blu-Bob2 output expander was selected as a speaker management processor, replacing the bulky existing analogue rack. Amplification then came courtesy of Crown XTi 4002s, which drive six dual 15-inch JBL MRX525 speakers for the main cluster and delay unit, and four MRX518S subwoofers. An additional four EON510 active stage monitors were installed for vocal monitoring. To solve the under-balcony coverage issues, the team replaced the broken or underperforming speakers, installing eight JBL Control26 CT high power ceiling speakers.

With the project complete, Roslan Bin Abdul Rahim, sound technician for MBPJ pointed out that although the new system has improved the sound quality in the auditorium a lot, the most significant improvement is the addition of the digital console, which gives his clients more flexibility and control.
