MALAYSIA: Measat Broadcast Network System Sdn Bhd (more commonly known as Astro) recently appointed Salzbrenner Stagetec Mediagroup to act as its audio consultant and to provide training for its staff. Astro is currently in the process of adopting loudness management based on the ITU 1770 standards, and as part of the agreement, Salzbrenner Stagetec Media Academy’s Jean Paul Moerman flew in from Germany to consult and train the staff at the premises.
The training and consultancy process took more than a week, and included all of Astro’s facilities. This comprised studio production, MCR and transmission, the post production studio, and the Astro Arena and Astro Awani.
‘We needed to know what was the best way to move towards a uniform loudness,’ said Gautaman Ramasamy, project champion of the Astro audio committee. ‘With the expertise that Jean Paul has with other international broadcasters, he has provided us with a deep insight to build our foundation and to provide our customers with uniform and superior audio quality.’
‘Astro has one of the most complex platforms for any broadcaster, and with proper loudness management, we can see that the audio quality has improved dramatically,’ added David Chan, managing director of Salzbrenner Stagetec Mediagroup Sdn Bhd.
‘In order to properly manage loudness, it will take a team like the Astro audio committee to champion the project,’ said Mr Moerman. ‘Astro is very much ready for loudness and are on the right path. Given a little more training and awareness, I believe that they will master the loudness format in no time.’
