ATSC 3.0 SFN transmitter network makes global debut

SOUTH KOREA: The world’s first ATSC 3.0 SFN transmitter network has reportedly been installed in South Korea, as Seoul Broadcasting System (SBS) has invested in a Rohde & Schwarz SFN-based transmitter network. The broadcaster is in the process of establishing a terrestrial television network in Seoul ahead of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeonchang, which it plans to broadcast in UHD.
The Rohde & Schwarz network installed features a 1+1 passive reserve configuration with ATSC 3.0 and is slated to be in operation in November. The solution comprises 5kW and 2kW versions of the manufacturer’s THU9 liquid-cooled transmitters.
SBS opted for the Rohde & Schwarz system due to the manufacturer’s long-tem support and knowledge of TDMB, ATSC 1.0 and FM transmitters. During the evaluation phase, the broadcaster was also stated to have used the manufacturer’s transmitters as it conducted SFN trials for the ATSC 3.0 standard.
