Audio-Technica helps to reunite Culture Club

AUSTRALIA: Audio-Technica microphones were at the heart of an Australian New Years Eve reunion of Culture Club, an iconic 1980s British pop band who are set to embark on a 2012 world tour marking their thirtieth anniversary.
Taking place at Sydney’s Glebe Island, the concert used a wide variety of Audio-Technica microphones, all selected by the band’s front of house engineer Jimmy Sarikas, who described them as ‘performing beautifully’.
Among the models in use were four AT4047 large diaphragm condensers for drum and percussion overheads, plus two AT4051b cardioid condensers for percussion, a pair of ATM350 cardioid condenser clip-on microphones for saxophones and AT4053b hypercardioid condenser mics for hi-hats and snare resonant head. Two of the Japanese manufacturer’s AT875R shotgun mics were also deployed to capture crowd ambience in conjunction with a second pair of AT4051s.
‘With drums and percussion being so much a part of Culture Club’s reggae-influenced sound, it’s really important for me that the kit and percussion instruments sit perfectly in the mix,’ explained Mr Sarikas. ‘The AT4047 and AT4051b just sound wonderful, with a full but crisp, natural tone. I love the ATM350 clip-ons for the saxes too – you get such a big, impressive sound from those little mics.’
A similar set-up is expected to be used for the band’s world tour.
