Bangkok studio uses SSL 900+ SE for surround mixing

THAILAND: A new high-level recording studio in Bangkok is using a Solid State Logic AWS 900+ SE console for stereo and surround sound mixing projects.

Dubbed Shining Star Studio, the new facility specialises in recording live bands and reportedly boasts a wealth of microphones and outboard equipment for client use. The majority of tracking is done on Logic Pro directly from the new SSL console, which is located in the facility’s Studio A. According to the studio’s owner Pichet Permsubhirunya, the desk was chosen principally for its SuperAnalogue signal path as well as its support for mixing in 5.1, stereo or mono.

‘We have meticulously put together a collection of fine microphones, outboard mic pre amps, EQ, dynamics, reverb and effect units to help us create great sounding recordings,’ explained Mr Permsubhirunya. ‘We felt that an analogue console would serve us better as the centrepiece of the control room over a DAW controller and that led us to the AWS 900+ SE. We were impressed with the flexibility the console offers and we appreciate the comprehensive control of DAW recording, editing and mixing functions right from the console surface.’

According to Mr Permsubhirunya, the SSL desk is also helping the studio to service a growing demand among live bands for surround sound mixes. ‘With the AWS 900+ SE, we can address the needs of all our clients in terms of mixing in stereo or surround. While we mainly mix in stereo now, we are finding that our clients are starting to request mixing in surround. We also have requests for 5.1 to stereo down mix.’
