CAH tackles intelligibility at Wuxi Higher Normal School

CHINA: Enlisted to provide an acoustic solution for the concert hall at Wuxi Higher Normal School in Jiangsu Province, audio specialist CAH Professional Sound designed a system based upon Renkus-Heinz CF Series loudspeakers. The school, first founded in 1911 as Jiangsu Province Third Normal School, today boasts one of the region’s largest campuses. Used to host a regular calendar of symphonies, orchestral concerts and theatrical productions, the 446-seat auditorium boasts a ‘uniquely circular footprint spanning 340m in diameter that is adorned with a natural wood interior’. While ideal for the hall’s musical events, the intelligibility of spoken word presentations has reportedly suffered.

The newly installed main system comprises left and right arrays of CF101LA-5 line array loudspeakers, with each four-cabinet array running as a mono system to cover half the hall. Each array is topped with a pair of CFX12S subwoofers to provide low frequency reinforcement, while six R-H TRX61 two-way enclosures mounted on the stage lip provide front fills. A further four TRX61 cabinets provide onstage monitoring along with a pair of CF61-1 speakers. QSC amplifiers drive the system with audio processing controlled by a Rane RPM88.

Following the project, the installer has reported that the new system met with high praise from concert hall staff and patrons, and has resulted in a ‘number of glowing reviews of recent productions at the venue’.
