CNG Systems installs Bosch solution in Qantas hangar

AUSTRALIA: Queensland-based CNG Systems was recently tasked with installing an audio system into a Qantas heavy hangar at Brisbane Airport. The hangar is used by the Australian airline for servicing aircrafts and required an audio system for relaying messages to servicing engineers.
David Kyle and Peter Billingham from consultants Norman Disney Young demanded a system that would produce 100dB SPL on the hangar floor so as to provide intelligibility when a jet engine is in operation. However, the same system could not further excite the reverberation in this metal structure with concrete floors and as such a speech transmission index (STI) of 0.55 was cited.
A central paging system consisting of a Dynacord Promatrix 8000 controller controls the audio in the hangar, integrating paging and voice evacuation announcements. The digital matrix manager can provide up to 16 audio inputs and 16 audio outputs, but in this instance controls six zones in both the working areas and two back of house areas.
Bryan Davidson from Bosch Communications created an EASE model for the space and then began the lengthy process of determining a suitable solution. In total, 14 Bosch XLA 3200 column line array speakers were installed to provide delay sound reinforcement, whilst eight EV Sx600PIX dual 12-inch two element line array speakers have been fixed at a height of 10m above the hangar floor, where the SPLs had to measure 100dB or higher. Bosch LBC3099 ceiling speakers and 36 Bosch LS1-UC20E Pendant Sphere speakers cater for the back-of-house zones.
