Daegu Athletics Promotion Center targets intelligibility with RCF

SOUTH KOREA: The 5,000 seat Daegu Athletics Promotion Center in Daegu, South Korea was recently equipped with a substantial RCF sound reinforcement system. Installed by Winmeditech, the RCF system was selected to improve intelligibility in the centre, which is used as an international athletics stadium in addition to serving as an athletics academy for the national team.

In total, Winmeditech installed 50 RCF TTL33-A line array modules as the main clusters, with 4PRO 6001-A three-way speakers for out-fill with ART 312 passive sound reinforcement speakers, and an RDNet Control8 real-time monitor and control system for DSP monitoring. Six XTA Electronics DP424 digital signal processors with MediaMatrix’s Nion nX CobraNet were also deployed to take care of DSP management and integrated control. Additional products included an M400 Roland digital mixing console, four TOA WT-5805 UHF wireless tuners and a Denon DN-D4500 CD player.

‘The reason why the RCF system was selected was due to its light weight and compact size, and the fact that the system can monitored and controlled via RDNet,’ said Lars Yoshiyama, sales manager at RCF.

‘It’s a difficult task to get good speech intelligibility in a large stadium,’ he admitted. ‘To ensure good speech intelligibility, the speaker system has to be louder than the audience. The TTL 33-A was a great solution for this stadium because it is small box, but makes quite a loud and clear sound. Wherever someone is in the stands, they can hear a clear voice from the speaker system; the client is really happy!’

Mr Yoshiyama also explained that an added bonus for the client was that ‘they can monitor the status of the speakers during the show, and the systems can be easily maintained. Also, the speaker system can be split to several zones for special purposes. These days, the speakers not only produce the sounds, but are also a part of the events.’
