DAS Audio entertains 30000 at Beerfest Asia 2010

SINGAPORE: Featuring live performances by several of the region’s best known musical acts, giant screen broadcasts of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and an outdoor bazaar with a wide selection of foods, Beerfest Asia 2010 was a resounding success.

The celebration allowed attendees to sample beers from around the world, but it also served as a trade event for industry colleagues to exchange dialogue and promote their products during the SLV and Broadcast Asia exhibitions that were being hosted at the same time.

Held at Marina Promenade, live music was mooted as a key attraction during Beerfest 2010, but as an unofficial industry event it was going to be listened by the most critical ears in Singapore at the time. Luckily, DAS Audio was confident enough to supply a live sound reinforcement set-up for the five day event, whose artists included The Killer Queen Show (Freddie Mercury) and Achtung Baby (U2), both from Australia, in addition to Hell’s Belles (AC/DC) from the USA.

Technical support representative for DAS Audio Asia, Ron Koh, was onsite to provide logistical support for this year’s Beerfest. ‘This outdoor venue is located on the Singapore Grand Prix Formula One tracks overlooking the beautiful Marina Barrage with a backdrop against the Singapore Flyer and is one of Asia's most iconic visitor attractions,’ he said. ‘Knowing that some 30,000 spectators were scheduled to attend, it was critical that the sound system be capable of handling the sizeable crowds. Furthermore, the musical acts were all tribute bands that played the songs of their favourite artists, so it was essential this be a concert level system. These factors led to the deployment of the DAS Audio loudspeaker system and the hiring of well-known sound engineer Alex Carrasco, who recently relocated to Singapore to further his career, to run the system.’

The primary sound system consisted of 12 Aero 12A self-powered, two-way line array elements flown as six per side enclosures, augmented by six ground stacked LX-218A self-powered subwoofers. On stage, six self powered SM-15A monitors together with a single SML-15A stage monitor were deployed for the artists. Two Avant 15A compact loudspeakers were used as front fills, whilst four more Avant 15A speakers provided the audio for two of the three large projection screens showing the football games live from South Africa. Single Avant 15A speakers were used for announcements in the VIP area and in a tent where a third screen was set up.

‘This was a very fast set-up for us,’ furthered Mr Koh. ‘The Aero-12A system is compact and very easy to rig. Both the event organisers and the crew were amazed at how fast we got the system up and running. The Aero-12As covered 40m very evenly and being an active system, the cabling was effortless.  As the venue was narrow, the LX-218A centre-mono subs provided even sub bass frequency coverage. Everyone who encountered the system was very complimentary of its performance. Alex Carrasco, who has engineered for many world-class artists including Luis Miguel, the Eagles, Sheryl Crow and many others, mixed all the acts and was very impressed, as were the musicians themselves.’
