Dolby Atmos and Avid Pro Tools workshop held in India

INDIA: Avid and Dolby recently teamed up to host four separate audio post-production cinema workshops across Mumbai and Chennai to showcase how to best use Avid Pro Tools for sound design, and the correct way to mix in the new Dolby Atmos format. The workshop was aimed at theatres, large studios, sound designers and mix engineers. 

The sessions were held at the Dolby and Avid-equipped Media Artists Studio in Chennai and the Rajkamal Studio in Mumbai, where attendees were reassured that the topics discussed were not ‘a wide step away from a conventional film mix’, and that it ‘offers a huge jump in terms of what can be achieved sonically and creatively’.

Dolby noted that in India, many people were considering an Atmos mix to be very complicated. ‘So it was our job to show that it wasn’t different in general principle to a traditional film mix,’ said a Dolby spokesperson.

The event provided visitors with a first look at the new Atmos solution featuring Pro Tools, the only certified solution for Dolby Atmos. The format relies upon a plug-in made by Dolby, available as AAX and RTAS for Pro Tools.

Dolby’s David Gould took the time to discuss the technology behind the new format, whilst Rich Nevens from Avid led a session on why a hybrid mixing approach is ‘the best way forward’ with the new evolving formats. Avid’s Sreejesh Nair then provided a hands-on presentation on how a mix can be prepared, provided sound design tips, workflows and mixing techniques for Atmos.

‘The attendance was huge with almost all of the big names from the industry attending,’ said a spokesperson from the event. ‘Having first-hand exposure to this format and also getting to know the ins and outs of the workflow were an exciting thing for the engineers and sound designers.’
