Factory Sound updates Chapel off Chapel

AUSTRALIA: As a renowned leading progressive arts and entertainment venue in the Stonnington district of Melbourne, Chapel Off Chapel is very unique. Converted from a house of worship to an entertainment complex in 1995, the venue has earned multiple plaudits over the past two decades for hosting musical artists such as Coldplay and Shirley Bassey, as well as dramatic, visual arts and comedy productions. In addition, it is frequently used by TV broadcasters to host live audience productions. However, the aged PA system in the main theatre was in need of updating. Following consultation with Group Technologies Pty Ltd, Chapel Off Chapel has become fully equipped to cater for its varied calendar of events.

The 5.75m height theatre consists of a stage that is flat to the floor with a raked seating bank for a capacity audience of 255 patrons. An L-R Coda Audio PA system consisting of four LA4 line array cabinets and a single LA4 subwoofer per side now fulfils the theatre’s requirements. Installed by Melbourne-based Factory Sound, two powered AP8 v2 cabinets provide coverage for the centre seats, whilst four D5-Cube 5-inch speakers affixed to an overhead horizontal beam some 13m back from the stage serve as fills for those seats towards the rear of the 21m depth theatre.

‘The LA4 system is not only very unobtrusive, but it is extremely powerful providing a very clean sound right out of the box,’ commented Chapel Off Chapel technical supervisor Simon Prentice. ‘Combining dual 5-inch woofers with a 4-inch neodymium planar wave driver, the LA4 speaker system provides hi-fi sound and superb intelligibility.’ Operating within a frequency range of 60Hz to 20kHz(-3 dB), the 250W AES-rated cabinets are augmented further with the addition of the single 15-inch LA4 subwoofers down to 40Hz.

In combination with an XTA Audiocore processor, loudspeaker management has been enabled courtesy of a 2-in/6-out Coda Audio DNC260 digital system controller, which can be configured remotely via a PC over the proprietary C-NET network. Powering the combined LA4 and D5 Cube Coda Audio loudspeakers are two Camco D-Power 4 2,000W per channel amplifiers and a single Coda C3 2-channel 2,500W DSP amplifier. Located towards the rear of the seats, a Yamaha M7CL is used for mixing all the monitor and FOH inputs, whilst Sennheiser G3 wireless is the preferred choice for all the venue’s wireless performance needs.
