Groundriddim deploys Blackmagic Design at No Nukes festival

CHINA: Japanese art and performance collective Groundriddim used a Blackmagic Design Atem 1 M/E production switcher and Atem 1 M/E broadcast panel for live switching during their recent VJ performance at the No Nukes 2012 festival in Chiba City.
Groundriddim, a creative group consisting of Japanese musicians, engineers, directors, visual directors, graphic designers and illustrators, also used other Blackmagic Design products during the live event, including HyperDeck Shuttle SSD recorders, DeckLink Studio capture and playback cards, DVI extender and mini converter analogue to SDIs.
The No Nukes festival was created by Japanese composer and musician Ryuichi Sakamoto, gathering musicians and sponsors for a weekend of live music with 18 bands, including Sakamoto’s own Yellow Magic Orchestra, Kraftwerk and Asian Kung-Fu Generation.
During the festival, members of Groundriddim VJ'd for breakbeat duo Hifana and YMO. A live performance feed was sent to the Atem 1 M/E production switcher, with all switching controlled by the Atem 1 M/E broadcast panel and live performance feeds sent to a computer with a DeckLink Studio for capture.
Using a PC, Groundriddim added real time effects to live footage and sent this back to the Atem 1 M/E switcher via a DVI extender, while animation graphics via two MacBook Pro systems were sent to the switcher for real time keying. All of these components were then mixed live to the music.
‘Performances never go as planned; they are unpredictable as if they were a living thing,’ said Groundriddim director Go Matsumoto. ‘The combination of the Atem 1 M/E broadcast panel and the Atem 1 M/E production switcher, which proved to be incredibly reliable, were necessary to keep up with the many changes at the festival. We also used HyperDeck Shuttle to record our performance with the artists, which left us with very high quality video. Blackmagic Design products were a huge part of our success here.’
