JBL Vertec used for first National Stadium concert

SINGAPORE: A JBL Vertec sound system has been used to provide reinforcement for the first pop concert to be held at Singapore’s brand new National Stadium. Unusual Productions undertook all technical and production needs for the audio, lighting, visual, and staging requirements including organising the main technical crew. The concert was held for Singaporean-born Mandopop diva, Stefanie Sun, as part of the Stefanie Sun 2014 Kepler World Tour.

For the main system, JBL Vertec VT4888 cabinets were flown in hangs of 18 on either side of the stage. Low frequency support was provided courtesy of VT4880 full-size arrayable dual-18-inch subwoofers ground-stacked six cabinets high per side and positioned in front of the stage. The side fill systems also utilised six-per-side VT4888 ground arrays that adequately covered the upper seating areas. The delays consisted of a pair of flown fill systems comprising of eight VT4888 elements per side. Mixing was performed on an Avid Venue Profile desk, whilst power for the Vertec cabinets was provided by 44 Crown I-Tech 50000HD and 12000HD amplifiers.

Mahajak SKM Electronics Pte Ltd, who is the Singapore distributor for Harman, provided technical assistance with the upgrading of the Crown I-Tech HD amplifiers. The V5 preset upgrade reportedly enhances a number of Vertec performance attributes by leveraging the amp’s built-in OmnidriveHD linear phase FIR processing capability to provide improvements in horizontal coverage.

‘We have many companies who are still using the older series speakers with the I-Tech HD DSP amps,’ explained Dave Loh, general manager of Mahajak SKM Electronics. ‘What we are doing is upgrading their systems with our V5 presets and this gives a new tone to the existing speakers. So a company like Unusual only needs a software upgrade without replacing the hardware and this is a huge savings in cost for them.’
