Lawo-equipped OB truck covers Asian sporting events

ASIA: Broadcasting specialist Lawo is celebrating the use of an mc²56 console at two major sporting events in Asia, as the Mobile Production Unit (MPE) belonging to German national public broadcasters ARD and ZDF tours the region.

The MPE was first used in Shanghai for the FINA Swimming World Championships, while it will next be in action at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics at South Korea’s Daegu Stadium between August 27th and September 4th. It is equipped with a Lawo mc²56 in a 16-16C frame with two extensions of 16 faders each, bringing the overall number of faders up to 64. Seven DSP cards are also installed (one of which is used for redundant cover), providing 336 DSP channels, out of which 288 DSP channels are used actively.

Following a period of planning that began in March of this year, the MPE was shipped to Shanghai in six large containers and then installed within the International Broadcast Center (IBC). A further 16 containers of varying size were also provided to house the technical equipment, control rooms, editing staff, and offices for ARD and ZDF. Included were three Avid edit suites, one audio mix area and an equipment room with a video matrix, the Avid network, the EVS network, the Lawo console’s HD core and two matrix nodes for a Riedel talkback system.

The MPE reportedly used the Lawo console to mix the entirety of the FINA Swimming World Championships, though not in surround sound due to China’s CCTV only broadcasting in stereo. In all, 15 Dallis frames were used in different areas, all supplying signals to the console.
