Lawo’s server-based infrastructure streamlines operations for KBS

KOREA: Korean Broadcasting System (KBS), the country’s national broadcaster, has installed equipment from German-manufacturer Lawo into its master control rooms at several locations. A total of 14 Nova17 MkII routing systems have been installed to replace the existing 10-year-old technology with a new server-based infrastructure.
The project included equipping seven radio stations with main and backup Nova17 routers, the goal of which was to provide a fully redundant system of core radio broadcast facilities that can be easily operated by the broadcaster’s engineers, as well as provide sophisticated monitoring and alarm management functions. An additional benefit is that certain functions no longer need to be accessed via external devices, but are integrated directly within the Lawo equipment. The master control room at each location also now houses two Lawo VisTool systems and two KSC control panels.
Since adopting the new technology, the engineers at the broadcaster now have the ability to carry out complex configurations without requiring specialist knowledge. The radio engineering team is reported to be particularly impressed with the customisation available in the VisTool user interface, where page layout and logic functions can now be quickly set up.
The system status of the seven programmes is monitored by two log servers via Simple Network management Protocol (SNMP), that then hands over the status to monitoring software from Korean developer, AD-Soft. This is controlled by an automatic transmission system, while the audio file system is from French manufacturer, Dalet.
