LAX and Clear-Com prepare for Shenzens Universiade 2011

CHINA: The forthcoming Summer Universiade 2011, which is taking place in Shenzen, China between August 12th and 23rd, is to benefit from an intercom system supplied by Clear-Com which will link an International Broadcasting Centre with 27 stadiums via IP. Meanwhile, Chinese loudspeaker manufacturer LAX has equipped the event’s main venue with a substantial sound reinforcement system.

The Universiade is an international sporting competition and cultural festival for students that takes place every two years in varying countries. Often described in athletics circles as second in importance only to the Olympic Games, the summer event comprises 12 permanent sporting events including basketball, fencing, soccer, gymnastics, judo, swimming, diving, water polo, table tennis, tennis, volleyball and up to three additional events chosen by the host country. A winter Universiade also takes place in the same calendar year.

For this year’s Shenzen-based event, Clear-Com has provided 48-port Eclipse-Median digital matrix intercom plus 117 V-Series control panels, three IVC-32 32-channel IP matrix cards and a Concert software-based intercom system. The equipment is being used to provide a communications link between broadcasters working in the International Broadcasting Centre (IBC) with those in the stadiums.

According to the manufacturer, the IVC-32 cards will enable direct IP connectivity from the Eclipse hardware frame within the IBC to the various V-Series panels located throughout the IBC centre and surrounding stadiums. The design will also allow members of the management team to communicate with broadcasters via Concert virtual panels on their computers.

Jeffery Wu, Clear-Com’s regional sales manager and chief representative for China, described the manufacturer’s involvement in Universiade 2011 as ‘a very prestigious win. We are thrilled that Universiade 2011 has entrusted Clear-Com with its most critical communications needs.’

Meanwhile, LAX – the event’s official sound reinforcement partner – has installed a comprehensive loudspeaker system into the Universiade’s 60,000-capacity Main Gymnasium, which is located in the central area of Universiade New Town in Shenzen’s Longgang District. The project reportedly took a year to complete.

The installation includes 176 line array loudspeakers distributed around the arena’s roof-space, eight flown LAX OP2408L curve-array cabinets and 122 MA8200 power amplifiers separated across five control rooms, all of which were completed in just 15 days. A total of 16 LAX M2112 stage monitor enclosures are also being used to cover the VIP zone.
