Massey University invests in Avid and Genelec for surround mix suite

NEW ZEALAND: Protel International Technologies recently supplied Avid and Genelec equipment to the College of Creative Arts at Massey University for its new surround mix suite. The suite is located in Te Ara Hihiko, the newly completed College of Creative Arts building.
Protel International Technologies’ Scott Simpson led the project, which was managed at Massey University by Keir Husson, technical demonstrator. The ‘centrepiece’ of the suite is said to be the recently installed Avid Icon D-Control with surround panners, which control a Pro Tools HDX2 DSP card system. For surround monitoring duties, Genelec’s 8250A Smart Active monitors with matching 7271A active subwoofers were chosen.
‘The new suite enables us to mix post-production sound more professionally,’ commented Mr Husson. ‘The Icon console provides students with industry standard equipment. With the Genelec Smart Active monitors, we’ve been able to match the monitors to the room automatically using the in-built DSP functionality, which was important.
‘I have personally been using Genelec for 15 years and have not heard anything better,’ he enthused. ‘The suite will enable the college to expand its sound courses within the design degree. Students from the Bachelor of Design degree have already taken a keen interest in sound and sound design and will use the new suite to enhance their final year projects. The college is now also able to hire out these facilities to its partners in the creative industry.’
