Munro designs studio for Indian sound designer

INDIA: Munro Acoustics recently designed a new studio in Santacruz, Mumbai, for sound designer Baylon Fonseca. Mr Fonseca will be using the new studio for his work on feature films, advertising and documentaries.
‘When setting up the new studio I was constrained for space and the location was noisy,’ said Mr Fonseca. ‘In addition I was setting the studio up on a floor that has a family living in the adjacent flat, so I wanted to avoid disturbing them. Munro Acoustics has been working in India for a long time and the name is well known. I wanted to go with an acoustic designer who had a flare for handling a challenge and was capable of delivering a design streamlined to my requirements as a sound designer.’
‘Baylon called up one day to show me a space he proposed to convert to a 5.1 setup for sound designing,’ continued Munro Acoustics’ Kapil Thirwani. ‘We had to isolate the space from the residence above and the editing room behind his room. In small 5.1 rooms the problem is low frequency control, so that the when the program material is taken to film scoring rooms and Dolby mix rooms there should be a smooth translation. We used our concept for small 5.1 setups, and fabricated it on site. This is a service we like to offer to clients in India who build studios in existing residential building. The modular studio can be taken with them when they move.’
Mr Fonseca uses Pro Tools HD3 with Genelec 8250A 5.1 monitors and a 7271A sub as the basis of his studio setup. ‘Nothing extraordinary, yet it seems to be interesting to most, given the kind of results that have been produced over the last couple of years,’ said Mr Fonseca, who transferred the equipment from his previous studio in Bandra West.
Since moving into the new studio, Mr Fonseca has completed several films including Joker, Dekh Tamasha Dekh and Pune 52. He is currently working on Kai Po Che.
