New audio system for Ausgrid Stadium

AUSTRALIA: Newcastle’s Ausgrid Stadium’s recently redeveloped Western Grandstand has been outfitted with a new audio system that was designed and implemented by The PA People. In a deal distributed by Jands, the sporting facility was installed with equipment from Harman brands JBL, Crown and BSS.

The stadium has been equipped with JBL Application Engineered loudspeakers with weatherised treatment for external use (WRX), as well as 24 29AV and 72 25AV Control Contractor speakers. All monitors are driven by Crown CTS amplifiers fitted with a Crown IQ PIPUSP4/CN DSP card. Overlay processing and control is via BSS London Blu systems.

Loudspeakers for the stands consist of six clusters of spaced elements mounted close to the leading edge of the roof and a quantity of fill speakers to cover areas shadowed from the main clusters. These comprise of one JBL AM5212 to cover the grandstand upper seating, and one JBL AM4315 to cover the lower seating area. The AM4315 is operated as a passive three-way and is driven from a dedicated channel of Crown CTS2000 amps. Open arena viewing areas are covered by using a ‘long throw’ JBL PD5212WRX.

Both loudspeakers are oriented horizontally, and due to the horn pattern and orientation, the grandstand upper seating can be serviced by a single enclosure while maintaining SPL variation of within the target +/- 3dB. This has reportedly ‘virtually eliminated’ interference effects.
