NHK goes with Tascam digital sound recorders

JAPAN: The Japan Broadcasting Corporation, Nihon Housou Kyokai (NHK), is set to replace its tape-based recorders and players with solid state recorders using Compact Flash cards. The broadcaster has opted to do this with equipment from Tascam.
The manufacturer won the deal after a competitive bidding process for digital sound recorders and players for NHK’s main and local stations. As a result it will supply over 500 units of its HS-4000 four channel audio recorder to the broadcaster’s main and local stations. On top of this, Tascam will provide RC-HS32PD remote controllers for the units and the Compact Flash cards.
The reason behind NHK moving to Compact Flash cards is that the broadcaster believes it to be the most reliable media for multi-channel recording.
The HS-4000 unit has been developed by the manufacturer after visits to a number of broadcasters to try to understand the requirements and desired features in the broadcast environment. Following its successful bid, there has been regular interchange between Tascam and NHK in order to improve the product and adjust its features for real pro broadcasting stations.
