NHK plans 222 surround monitoring with Real Sound Lab

JAPAN: The broadcasting relay division of Japanese national broadcaster NHK has acquired nine Apeq-8proDIO acoustic power equalisers from Real Sound Lab for use in 22.2 channel monitoring. The broadcaster has long experimented with 22.2 systems and is reportedly planning to implement the set-up for the 2012 London Olympics.

Following the purchase, NHK’s monitoring systems will be analysed by Real Sound Lab’s Coneq measurement software and from the gathered data very precise compensation filters will be created and exported to the Apeq hardware equalisers.

The sale follows Real Sound Lab Japan’s recent demonstration of the Coneq software for NHK, during which the broadcaster’s engineers reportedly commented that ‘the announcer’s voice became very similar to the real voice. It is very challenging to make 24 speaker systems perform well, but with the Coneq compensation applied the result was excellent.’
