KOREA: Second only in scale to the Olympics in the world of sport, the 17th Asian Games in Incheon recently opened its doors to 10,000 athletes from 45 countries. In support of this, audio and video specialist Lawo provided approximately 110 IP-based Commentary Control Units (LCU), promising smooth broadcasting of commentator’s audio throughout the competition, from the opening ceremony and athletic events taking place in the Main Stadium right through to the Judo matches taking place in the smaller sports halls. The equipment was provided by the manufacturer’s rental partner, Audio Broadcast, which was supplied with a complete support service package directly from Lawo.
In addition, 10 Lawo mc² consoles were supplied to handle audio mixing – eight mc²56 consoles in the different venues in addition to a further mc²56 in the International Broadcast Centre (IBC), and a Lawo mc²66. A 22-strong team of Lawo support technicians were deployed to ensure the smooth running of the games, taking care of all of the manufacturer’s on-site equipment, including the LCUs that are connected to the Commentary Switching Centre (CSC) in the IBC via fibre-optic.
Router links between the venues, and monitoring and scheduling of the 45 distribution channels was controlled via L-S-B’s Virtual Studio Management (VSM). Fifty hardware panels and 10 software GUIs also ensured that all signals reached their desired destinations. Two further central software GUIs displayed the transmission schedule and status monitoring on the main monitor wall in the CDT (Contribution-Distribution-Transmission) centre. In all, the Asian Games used eight VSM systems in Korean OB vans, the IBC and a backup OB van.
