Sennheiser Asia equips Pure Fitness with K-Array

SINGAPORE: Having initially brought the best fitness experiences from around the world to four locations in Hong Kong, Pure Fitness recently added a second location in Singapore at Asia Square - Marina View. Sennheiser Asia was asked to design, supply and install a PA system into the 18m x 25m exercise studio, based on a similar set up to those installed in Hong Kong.

The state of the art facility is equipped with specialist facilities including a designated boxing ring and functional training area and even offers pole-dancing classes for ladies. In addition to Denon CD and iPod playback, fitness experts equipped with wireless headsets utilise the PA system to offer instructions to members during sessions.

Unlike the Hong Kong locations, a wall mounted speaker solution was ruled out in favour of a ceiling suspended system at Asia Square – Marina View. ‘The management wanted the sound system to aesthetically blend into the surroundings, whilst providing even coverage without reverberation,’ offered project manager Herman Suparman. ‘Being on the sixth level, the sound could not penetrate the upper and lower levels, so the false ceiling has an acoustic lining above.’

A total of eight Kobra KK50 speakers have been ceiling mounted and are divided into three zones whilst a further two Nynja KJ50vb speakers have been added at the front of a raised stage area. Powered by four KA10-10 2-u half-rack width power amplifiers, the PA system benefits from a dbx 1231 equaliser, whose resultant signals are routed through a Cloud CX263 stereo mixer. Four floor-standing KL18MA active subwoofers provide low frequency extension, whilst a Furman PS-PRO E Series II unit added to the rack caters for power conditioning and sequencing.

‘The 12 ceiling speakers could not be recessed into the 3m height ceiling as originally intended, but they have been fixed to a customised support fitted above the false ceiling,’ furthered Mr Suparman. ‘Finished in white, however, many members don’t even know where the source of the audio is coming from. It’s powerful, clean and intelligible and is used for all exercise classes from yoga to high energy workouts.’

The KJ50vb speakers were initially designed as flat floor monitors, so being inverted onto a ceiling highlights their versatility, whilst eliminating reverberation off the walls and glazed windows.

In addition, a K-Array KR200s Redline Series system has been supplied to the iFly Singapore bar and restaurant called SkyLoft. Operating within a 40hz-19kHz frequency range with 127dB continuous output, the self-powered KR200s system is comprised of two KL18ma 18-inch subwoofers together with two pole mounted KR200 ultra-slim line array satellites. Each KR200 2m height chassis contains 32 2-inch neodymium transducers. Hinged together for focusing and easier transport, the slim profile and minimum distance between drivers reproduce a full vocal frequency range and a phase coherent 120-degrees x 7-degrees coverage.

Located on Siloso Beach Walk on Sentosa Island, the entertainment outlet is located on the top floor offering sunset views from its extensive outdoor patio area. Live music by local bands such as Jack & Rai, Shirlyn & the UnXpected and 53A together with DJ performances set the right ambiance for its patrons.

‘The manager wanted a system that would provide consistently even coverage in the 250 capacity area despite the windy conditions, yet would remain unobtrusive,’ explained sales manager Matthew Tan. ‘Many of the diners here keep looking around for the speakers, but have difficulty in finding them,’ he concluded.
