Sonodyne launches first DSP product at IBC 2010

IBC: Indian studio monitor specialist Sonodyne has launched the production model of its first DSP rack unit in the shape of the BMS205 bass management processor. The 1U processor was announced at IBC 2010.

Having initially been previewed at Frankfurt Pro Light & Sound earlier this year, the BMS205 is now in full production and ready to ship. It has been designed to simplify the operation of 5.1 systems, with Sonodyne director Anandya Mukherjee reasoning that ‘most of the time it’s actually very difficult to do bass management because the location of the subwoofer is quite complex. What we’ve seen other brands do is get all of the signals into the subwoofer and from the subwoofer into the satellites again, but there’s no control. So we just took everything out – we have a separate box now.’

Capable of managing both 2.1 and 5.1 systems and offering the ability to mute and solo every channel, the BMS205 is primarily intended for mid-level broadcast, post-production and recording applications. Joining it is the BMS205-R remote control for operating master level and mutes.

‘You can use the BMS205 in either 2.1 or 5.1 mode,’ explained Mr Mukherjee. ‘The interesting thing about the 2.1 mode is that it derives the subwoofer from the left and right and depending on where you set the crossover, it takes the low pass effects into the subwoofer and the rest into the tops. In 5.1, if you have five channels and you don’t have a discrete LFE input, depending on where you set the filter, it will take all of the channels input underneath that and put them in the subwoofer. We’ve made it easy for people.’

Speaking at IBC, Mr Mukherjee added that Sonodyne developed the processor in response to market feedback derived from the manufacturer’s currently growing distribution network. ‘We’re getting a lot of input. You can only do so much in the laboratory, you have to get input from the market.’ He continued: ‘We’re quite excited because it’s our first DSP product.’
