Sumber Ria brings Melodie to Konser Kidung Abadi Chrisye concert

INDONESIA: Sumber Ria installed the sound system for the recent Konser Kidung Abadi Chrisye commemorative concert in Indonesia, which saw Erwin Gutawa conduct a 90-piece orchestra.

Sumber Ria provided the installation as well as the premixing for all sequencer material, as well as acting as the consultant for the orchestra set-up and sound production.

Meyer Sound boxes were used as the main left and right speakers, which were provided by the Jakarta Convention Center. To complete the 5.1 surround configuration, Sumber Ria provided Meyer M'elodie speakers for the rear, while KV2 Audio speakers were used as centre speakers. Sumber Ria also set the subwoofers, hidden under the VIP tribune to enhance the special effects.

A DiGiCo SD7 console was used for FOH, whilst the manufacturer’s D1 and SD8 were utilised as monitor consoles. A DiGiCo D5 and SD8 were selected to mix the broadcast, and an Allen & Heath iLive-80 system was also put to use. Three 56-channel DiGiCo stage racks connected using five Optocore and 10 coaxial Madi cables were selected to integrate Sumber Ria's five consoles. Meanwhile, two Avid Pro Tools HD systems were utilised for the orchestra's sequencer and lead vocal playback. The first system was used to play the sequencer track, while the second was connected using a Radial Engineering SW8 multi-switcher as a back up should the first Pro Tools experience any problems.

Sadat Effendy, the main engineer, selected the DiGiCo SD7 for FOH. Instead of using multiple consoles, Mr Effendy wanted to operate a single desk that could comfortably handle 194 channels spread between the multi sequencer channels and a live orchestra. A total of 170 channels were recorded using three Merging Technologies Pyramix DAW systems.

Sumber Ria spent around three days premixing the audio, took two days for off-site rehearsals, whilst the final two days were spent completing the final installation and sound check for the orchestra.

Mr Effendy explained that there were three challenges to overcome: ‘The first was how to seamlessly integrate the playback material from the late lead singer with the multi sequencers and the live orchestra. Another challenge was to make sure the playback premix had a consistent quality, as the content was gathered from various sources (such as CDs, DVDs, even previous concerts recorded on old cassettes). Last but not least was how to use the SMPTE Timecode to synchronise between the audio and the video material of the late artist singing his old songs,’ he explained.

All issues were resolved, as when asked about the concert, Mr Gutawa said: ‘The sound engineer was very knowledgeable, the technology used by Sumber Ria was superb, and the sound crew worked in a detailed and organised matter. The combination of all three resulted in an awesome sound production for the event,’ he enthused.
