INDONESIA: Sumber Ria was chosen as the contractor to supply the audio equipment for the recent Southeast Asian Games (also known as SEA Games). Sumber Ria provided the sound system equipment for the event’s main opening and closing ceremonies in the Jakabaring stadium, Palembang.
Having provided the sound system for the 1997 SEA Games, Sumber Ria was selected by event organiser Kompas TV and the official TV collaboration company RCTI for 2011, and supplied the sound engineering and installation teams as well as providing the audio system.
For the opening and closing ceremonies, thousands of performers including dancers, orchestras, musicians, a 100-person choir, and well-known artists from Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines performed at the 40,000-capacity stadium.
To provide adequate sound coverage for such a large-scale event, Sumber Ria supplied a total of 36 KF 760 line arrays and eight KF 761 arrays from EAW for the main PA system. Thirty-six Sumber Ria custom-built SB550 subwoofers were selected, powered by 44 Lab.gruppen 6400 amplifiers, as well as 18 8001 power amps from Crest Audio. Two DiGiCo SD8 consoles provided FOH control, whilst an SD8 24 was selected as the stage monitor console, and a D5 was utilised as a broadcast console.
A Genelec 8050 monitoring system was also chosen, whilst stage monitors were made up of 36 RCF Art 500 two-way full range loudspeakers, and four MJF-212s from Meyer Sound. Equipment from Shure and Countryman was also utilised for the wireless system. A Shure Shotgun was used to capture the stadium ambiance, while two Shure Microflex mics were used during Indonesia’s President’s speech. Meanwhile, two Avid ProTools HD1 systems as well as equipment from Roshendal and Apogee were selected.
‘We are proud to be the sound system provider for such prestigious occasion,’ said Yonas Supryanata from Sumber Ria. ‘It is not only about being a part of an important international sporting event, but more about representing Indonesia to the international sound industry. We want to prove that Indonesia has the resources and the skills to support such a mega-scale event, and we hope it will become a benchmark for future SEA Games ceremonies – such as the SEA Games in Myanmar which will be held in 2013.’
The Sumber Ria team reported that set up, technical rundowns, system checks, and the grand rehearsals took approximately a two days to complete prior to each event. When pressed on the subject of challenges experienced within the project, Mr Supryanata said: ‘Just the sheer size of the stadium alone as well as the amount of performers posed a lot of challenges, and ranged from coordination, to harsh weather, to making sure the stadium and the audience had balanced sound system coverage.’
Indra Yudistira was described as the 'brain' behind the event, and acted as show director. He received technical backup from his colleagues Taufik Hidayat and Achmad Geboy from KG Production.
Mr Supryanata reports that despite the heavy rain experienced during the project, the closing ceremony was deemed a success, and that Vice President Boediono ‘thanked everybody involved for their hard work in making the event possible’.
