Synergy AVL supplies Black Box Theatre with sound and lighting system

SINGAPORE: Synergy AVL was awarded the contract to supply and install the National Art Council’s Black Box Theatre with a new sound and lighting system. The theatre features an all-black interior, and is utilised for a number of theatrical productions.

The client contacted Synergy AVL after deciding that its previous sound and lighting system needed to be improved. Following this, the design and consulting team surveyed the venue’s existing sound system and decided to replace it with equipment from Outline, Mackie and Shure.

The team selected models from Outline’s Eidos series for the permanent install, reporting that it would be the best system to suit the venue’s requirements when combined with Eidos subwoofers. ‘This combination enables further extension and greater dynamics,’ said a Synergy AVL spokesperson. Four Eidos 15 two-way speakers were installed, as were two Eidos 12 monitor speakers, accompanied by an Eidos 118SW 18-inch subwoofer.

To ensure that the theatre was well equipped to cater for its range of theatrical productions and that it could deliver a high quality of audio for any type of act or performance, the team also selected a Mackie 2404VLZ3 24-channel analogue mixer with a built-in digital signal processor, Shure wireless handheld and headset microphones, along with CD and cassette player rack mounts from Numark and Tascam.

Synergy AVL carried out detailed photometric studies of the venue’s existing lighting systems, and re-proposed the arrangement of the luminaries to even-out the lighting coverage. Models from Luci Della Ribalta (LDR) were selected, comprising four Alba 8/22 profile lights, 14 Aria F1000 fresnels, and 16 Alba 18/36 profiles. Three Delta 10F LED lights from DTS Lighting were installed to provide all LED colour effects, whilst equipment from Monon, LDR and Macostar were also chosen to complete the new lighting system.

All theatrical luminaries are connected through an SRS Lighting DDP1213 wall-mount dimmer. A Zero 88ORBXF lighting control board has been installed for the benefit of the lighting programmer, which Synergy AVL describes as ‘ideal’ for controlling any live events at the theatre.
