Teatime with Riedel

SINGAPORE: As the first day of Broadcast Asia wound to a close, Riedel Communications hosted its Teatime Tech Talk at Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands. This was an informal panel discussion to debate the impact that innovation is having on industry standards.

Riedel’s CEO, Thomas Riedel, was on the panel along with several of his peers. Ideal Systems (Singapore) CEO, Fintan Mc Kiernan, Asia-Pacific Broadcasting publisher, Andrew Yeo, owner of Beyond Broadcast, Loh Siu Yin, Telkom Vision deputy project director, Gede Mayun, and principal at Picture Board, Unmish Parthasarthi, all served as panellists.

The panel sought to explore how solutions being developed are altering the landscape of the broadcast sector, looking into new technology and workflow. All were reportedly in agreement that the broadcast industry is moving towards total adoption of IP.

‘Our Tech Talk provided an engaging and valuable look at technologies and solutions, and the role they are playing in shaping the broadcast business,’ offered Mr Riedel. ‘Broadcast Asia again proved an essential event for the exhibition of emerging technologies, and particularly the impact of IP on how broadcasters and other media professionals deliver their products and services.’

‘We have already started moving customers to full IP, and we believe the tipping point for the industry will come in the next few years,’ stated Mr Mc Kiernan. ‘Customers are looking to make sure that their investments aren't made obsolete too quickly, and they are looking at pricing on baseband and on IP.’

‘IP is great for store-and-forward and for playout, but when it comes to live and OB applications, beware! There can be dragons there,’ warned Mr Siu Yin. ‘The killer feature of IP broadcasting is software-defined networking. When broadcasters can reconfigure their networks five minutes before going to air, we'll then know that we have entered the realm of IP.’
