Tec Revox installs TOA for Singaporean mall

SINGAPORE: Systems integrator Tec Revox was recently awarded the contract to design and install a substantial TOA sound reinforcement system into a mall located within Singapore’s Chinatown.

The mall and adjacent office tower recently invested in a full makeover in which the analogue BGM and voice evacuation system was to be upgraded to digital. Tec Revox’s brief included re-wiring the entire signal chain, which at its heart contains a TOA VX-2000 series integrated voice evacuation system.

The VX-2000 system manager is an input matrix unit that functions as the main controller assigning input signals to four audio buses. In addition to controlling the audio signal routing and priorities, it also allows the input and output controls to be managed on a PC, where a log of all the recorded events and failures can be viewed. An EVC digital recorder can also playback the evidence.

Interfaced to the VX-2000 is a VX-2000SF surveillance frame, serving as the output matrix section assigning the audio signals to 23 individual zones in six shopping mall levels, plus the car park from its four audio buses. Background music is played through the system, but these can be interrupted by making general purpose and emergency announcements via the RM-200X microphone and its RM-200 extension. The system is linked to all the retail outlets, allowing the facility manager to override every separate PA system in the mall should an emergency evacuation announcement need to be made.

The entire speaker system is powered by 18 VP-2421 power amplifiers – three of which are redundant. Each amplifier features 420W power on a single channel using the VP-200VX power amplifier module. The shopping mall is now graced with a ceiling speaker solution in which 620 TOA PC-648R 5-inch models now provide an even dispersion of BGM. A total of 82 SC-615M horn speakers have been wall mounted in the car park, whilst a further 16 BS-633A box speakers adorn the fire escape staircases. Integrated with a resin panel and speaker frame, the PC-648R ceiling speaker features a spring clamp mechanism.

‘It weighs less than 500g, and can be easily mounted to the ceiling,’ said Jack Tay, Tec Revox’s operations manager. ‘The input impedance can also be easily changed by changing the tap position of the transformer.’

The cramped conditions in the control room meant that Tec Revox had to pre-assemble the racks off site, before terminating the cabling. Mr Tay explained that the client desired a local systems integrator for after sales service and in Tec Revox, that is what they got.

‘Additionally, TOA offer great support and helped us design the system here. Their office is just five minutes walks from here! For us, choosing the TOA VX-2000 system is a no brainer as it is ultra-reliable, easy to install and for the facility manager it is easy to use. It really does offer excellent value for money.’
