TURKEY: Asimetrik vice president and sound engineer, Gorkem Çelikbilek, spoke at the recent ATMM (Audio Technologies for Music and Media) conference in Istanbul. Mr Çelikbilek was part of a panel discussion titled Current and Future States of the Audio Industry in Turkey.
ATMM is an international and interdisciplinary conference that focuses on the various aspects of audio, audiovisual and music technologies for music and media, as well as the relationship between sound, music and image in both traditional and new media.
Mr Çelikbilek discussed acoustic design and the installation of multi-purpose convention centres. He said that ‘acoustic design needs careful planning and execution of the latest audio technology to facilitate communication between the performer and the audience. Every project should be designed uniquely rather than taking a “one system suits all” approach.’
He also addressed the effects of acoustics in our daily lives, such as within hospitals, schools and houses of worship. However, one of the most important topics covered was that architects and designers should pay more attention to the acoustics of the spaces they design, rather than leaving all the electroacoustic system design to the integrators. ‘Matching the architectural and electroacoustics is the key to a perfect design,’ noted Mr Çelikbilek.
