NAMIBIA: Taking place at the Swakopmund Indoor Sports Centre, the 2015 Namibian Annual Music Awards (NAWAs) were supported with over 100 lighting fixtures from Robe. Windhoek-based dB Audio Namibia was enlisted by event producer, Rockstar 4000, to provide the show’s full technical production. The lighting scheme was created by Jonathan Bandli from design practice, Bad Weather, in Cape Town.
The show was sponsored and broadcast live by Mobile Telecommunications Company (MTC) and the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC). It was the second time Mr Bandli had been enlisted for the NAMAs, having been asked last year by dB Audio Namibia to provide a production design incorporating the visual mediums of lighting, video and set. The idea for this year’s design was that the set, lighting and video were all integrally layered to produce ‘a more coherent overall look with each discipline complimenting the other’, and also structured so layers providing more exciting visual elements could be revealed as the show unfolded.
To carry out the design, the lighting complement included 18 BMFL Spots, 24 Pointes, 12 LEDBeam 1000s, 24 LEDWash 600s, eight LEDWash 300s, 12 LEDBeam 100s, eight 600E Spots and six ColorWash 700E ATs. It was the first time Mr Bandli had used BMFL Spots, which were recently purchased by dB Audio Namibia, and he reported being ‘extremely impressed’ with their brightness.
The BMFL Spots were arranged in three rows of six units on the three over-stage trusses, and were used for multiple tasks from standard spotlighting to specials, general front light, texturing plus aerial and beam effects. The LEDBeam 1000s were spaced in between the BMFLs on the mid and upstage trusses to create a back wash. Mr Bandli also had two LEDBeam 1000s on the set ramp for creating ‘eye-candy’ effects on camera. A large, generic ‘white-light’ rig was also present in the venue, and working with the BMFLs and the LEDWash 1000s, the overall intensity could ‘easily be lifted as needed to optimise lighting conditions for the cameras, whilst still retaining all the drama’.
‘Bad Weather is very proud to have such a good working relationship with dB Audio Namibia, who are a really switched-on and forward-thinking company,’ explained Mr Bandli. ‘It was fantastic being part of their team and helping to produce such a memorable NAMA show to the highest standards of technical and creative excellence.’
