Protec covers Chris Brown

UAE: Production Technology (Protec) took care of every audio aspect for Chris Brown’s recent Dubai Festival City concert. The production company provided the FOH, monitors, split, mics and back line for the show.

Protec opted to use a range of its L-Acoustics equipment for the rig. The main system consisted of hangs of 15 V-Dosc per side with three dV-Doscs as underhang. Added to this were 24 SB218s in six stacks of four in a cardioid configuration. For outfills, Protec used two hangs of two SB218s with eight Karas. Further to this four SB28s and for stacks of double Karas were used as centre fill.

Power for the whole system came from 31 LA8 amps. According to senior audio technician John Parkhouse, the use of LA network manager for the whole rig provided ‘a number of options for system contour and tuning, something I spent a lot of time perfecting for the venue.

‘We ran also ran it in AES/EBU mode keeping the whole system in the digital domain from the stage racks, through the desk and back to the amps,’ continued Mr Parkhouse. ‘The clarity was simply phenomenal.  I actually think it is the best I’ve ever heard the V-Dosc,’ he enthused. ‘I ran the system hot to the appreciation the FOH engineer and the rig stood up to the test admirably.

‘At a show like this, hitting 100-105dB+ peaks you often find your ears are ringing for a little while after,’ added the senior audio technician. ‘After this show I found little trace of this. I suspect the cleanliness of the sound meant that we experienced less harmonic distortion than running analogue,’ he continued. ‘Since this concert we are running shows with LA Raks AES/EBU pretty much every time we are able to.’

Control for the show was courtesy of Avid Venue consoles. A pair of 96-channel Profiles were in use at FOH and monitors.
