UGANDA: Dubai-based Sony Professional Solutions MEA (PSMEA) has been selected by the Uganda Broadcasting Company (UBC) to manage, design and deliver a new state-of-the-art HD broadcast centre at its Kampala headquarters.
The facility will equip UBC with an integrated suite of HD-ready technologies to enhance its public national broadcasting capability and quality. The centre will comprise two three-Camera HD news and production studios, fitted with comprehensive lighting systems and Virtual Reality projection technologies. Sony PSMEA hopes its Sony Media Backbone portfolio and Sonaps news production solution, integrated with the Sony Networked Post Production and Playout system and XDCAM archiving, will ‘enhance the quality and efficiency of digital programme recording, file-based workflows, content editing and publishing’.
‘Our investment in the new broadcasting complex and the latest Sony technologies will help us to stand tall against satellite TV channels for the attention of our viewers. We look forward to completion of the new studios later this year,’ said Paul Kihika, UBC’s managing director.
The entire solution will be constructed and pre-tested at Sony’s headquarters in Dubai, prior to installation, configuration and testing at UBC’s new Broadcast House in Kampala. Sony Professional will also provide on-site operational and maintenance training, as well as a six-month post-installation contract for technical support.
‘Sony Professional is working with a number of broadcasting entities in Africa, applying our extensive experience and innovative technologies to raise the standards and capabilities of national public service television.’ said Nigel Thompson, sales manager for Sony Professional Solutions MEA. ‘Our engagement with UBC is particularly interesting because this government owned service relies partly on commercial funding, which means delivering the quality of content and programming to attract audiences in a competitive market,’ he continued. ‘The cost effective solution we are delivering offers a fully-integrated HD-ready broadcasting centre that will support UBC’s mission well into the future.’
