The Lyric upgrades monitoring system

SOUTH AFRICA: The Lyric at Gold Reef City in Johannesburg has upgraded its stage monitoring system with the purchase of 12 Electro-Voice TX1152FM wedges. The sale was made through local EV distributor, Prosound.

‘The Lyric was originally kitted with EV SX100+ loudspeakers as floor monitors when it opened in 2007,’ said resident sound engineer Lee Brune. ‘We were looking to upgrade and get a more purpose-built loudspeaker to replace the SX Boxes after seven years of service.’

There was a variety of factors that led to the selection of the EV wedges. ‘We were looking for a purpose built floor monitor and we also wanted something that would be a smaller footprint for stage and storage than our SX100+ boxes,’ recalled Mr Brune. ‘I normally mix FOH and monitors from FOH and therefore we needed a durable loudspeaker for monitors. We also looked at amplifier compatibility as we had already replaced all our old amps with six EV Q1212s and needed to have a decent match.’

However, the ability to cover the variety of performance styles at the 1,100-seat theatre was the key factor in the selection of the monitors. ‘We needed a very versatile stage monitor that could keep up with our schedule. For instance, from hip-hop to Indian classical music in a single weekend,’ reasoned the sound engineer. ‘The EV TX1152FM certainly fits the profile, I can throw anything at it from full band monitors to simple dance fold back.’
