Alcons introduces modular pro-ribbon RR12
Published: PRODUCTS

Alcons Audio has announced the release of the RR12 modular pro-ribbon morphing loudspeaker. Developed as a ‘building block’ to create tight packed arrays for controlled sound coverage in the widest variety of audience areas, the RR12 extends Alcons’ line-source technology into different applications by implementing its pro-ribbon technology in a modular concept.
The manufacturer claims the RR12 combines a linear, non-compressed response from low to high SPL’s with a wide dynamic power output ratio. The distortion is claimed to average only 1/10th of that of traditional compression-based systems.
The system features Alcons’ proprietary RBN602rsr 6-inch pro-ribbon driver and a custom 12-inch woofer with 4-inch voice coil, and dual-spider suspension with forced-venting. Whilst both transducers have neodymium motor structures, the RR12 has a high performance-to-weight ratio.
The 6-inch pro-ribbon driver is based on Alcons’ new RBN02 pro-ribbon platform. According to Alcons, this platform has substantially raised the bar in power handling and efficiency, with a 1,000W peak power handling and a 1:17 dynamic RMS-to-peak ratio. Due to the ribbon’s cylindrical wavefront, no adapters or converters are needed to obtain perfect coupling, allowing for precise lobe-free directivity up to frequencies in excess of 20kHz. The inclusion of Alcons’ Morph-Max wave-guide enables wide-band directivity control from 1kHz to beyond 20Hz.
The trapezoidal cabinet comes fitted with integrated mounting hardware. When tight-packing the RR12 in horizontal or vertical arrays, dispersion patterns are formable in increments of 30-degrees.
The RR12 is designed to be driven by Alcons’ Sentinel 4-channel amplified loudspeaker controller. The system’s response is optimised by factory presets, and is selectable for each array configuration. Presets are also available for phase-matching low-frequency extensions.
In addition, Alcons’ proprietary SignalIntegritySensing pre-wiring provides cable/connector compensation between the RR12 and Sentinel, achieving a system damping factor of 10,000. Each array configuration can be simulated using Alcons Ribbon Calculator (ARC).
