Blue Sky monitors the Star System

Star System One 2.1 has arrived as the latest monitoring solution from US-based manufacturer Blue Sky, primarily aimed at broadcast and postproduction applications. Though in its most basic form the system comprises a single sub (the Sub 12D) and two satellites (the Sat 6D), the component loudspeakers are nevertheless described by the manufacturer as ‘building blocks’ for creating systems of varying sizes and configurations.

The Sat 6D incorporates Class-D amplification driving a custom made 6.5-inch high excursion radial magnet woofer and a 1-inch ring radiator tweeter sourced from Denmark’s Scan Speak. DSP is integrated to optimise performance parameters including baffle correction and driver time-alignment, while also allowing the satellite (primarily intended for 2.1 and 5.1 configurations) to be used as a full-range system if required.

Meanwhile the 12-inch Sub 12D boasts a long excursion driver that reportedly delivers an improved performance over its predecessor but in an enclosure that is approximately 33 per cent smaller and lighter. Inside the enclosure are DSP, parametric EQ, and Burr Brown converters.

Finally, the Audio Management Controller (AMC) is described as the heart of the system. The 5.1/7.1 digital processor provides full optimisation and control with 31-band parametric EQ on each channel, time delays for channel alignment as well as lip-sync, sample rate conversion, and both analogue and digital inputs and outputs.

Physically, the AMC remote control provides solo, mute, presets, master volume and other functions, though some set-up operations are accomplished in conjunction with a PC attached via the AMC’s USB port. Room optimisation is achieved via a proprietary system developed by Walborn and named Binary Organic Optimisation (BOO). Room measurement can be undertaken either with the system’s built-in measurement tools or via Smaart.
