Celestion debuts new ferrite low-frequency options

Celestion has announced four new additions to its next generation CF series of high-end, ferrite magnet, pro audio loudspeakers as well as the first of a new type of ‘reduced weight’ ferrite magnet, pressed steel LF driver.
The latest additions to its CF series are four 18-inch cast aluminium frame, ferrite magnet, low frequency drivers. The new products join the CF18VJD subwoofer which was launched in 2011.
The CF1830E and CF1840H are multi-purpose, entry-level loudspeakers for use in a reflex, scoop bass or horn-loaded subwoofer and as a bass unit in a large multi-way system. The CF1830E features a 3-inch multi-layer voice coil and delivers 500W RMS (AES standard) power handling and 94dB sensitivity. The CF1840H features a 4-inch multi-layer voice coil and delivers 1,000W RMS (AES standard) and 98dB sensitivity, achieved thanks to a lightweight carbon fibre-loaded cone.
The CF1840FD is designed to perform particularly well in horn-loaded subwoofer applications. It features a 4-inch multi-layer voice coil and delivers 1,000W RMS (AES standard) and 97dB sensitivity. Finally, the CF1840JD is designed for use in reflex subwoofer applications. It features a 4-inch multi-layer voice coil and delivers 1,000W RMS (AES standard) and 96dB sensitivity.
According to Celestion, the CF series features a number of new innovations. Dual Magnet Motor technology (DMM) incorporates a secondary magnet to increase the overall motor force (Bl) without the need for any additional increase in magnet assembly size. Balanced Airflow Venting (BAV) on the rear plate and pole-piece provides enhanced magnet assembly cooling, to further minimise thermal compression. A number of CF drivers also feature twin demodulation rings to reduce flux modulation, lowering electromagnetic distortion.
Designed using specialist FEA (Finite Element Analysis) techniques, the magnet assembly reportedly enables highly symmetrical cone movement which the manufacturer describes as ‘resulting in low harmonic distortion and a more efficient performance’.
Also new from the manufacturer is the TF1530SL. This 15-inch loudspeaker delivers 300W RMS power handling and 98dB sensitivity. It also reportedly boasts a lower weight than many standard 15-inch ferrite magnet LF drivers currently available.
The design of TF1530SL uses FEA techniques to make the most efficient use of the magnet assembly, resulting in a pole piece and end-plate that the manufacturer describes as having ‘a significantly lower mass than a standard ferrite device’. Celestion states that the advantages of this are not only a lighter weight, but also a reduced inductive rise. As with the CF series, the TF1530SL incorporates Celestion’s Dual Magnet Motor design.
A second reduced weight model, the 12-inch diameter TF1230SL, will also be available soon.
