Funktion One gives clear message with MST

Funktion One has officially unveiled its MST (Modular Stadium Technology) horn. The manufacturer has been developing this technology over the last few years as it worked on a series of large format loudspeaker horns which could deliver a high level of low frequency dispersion control. The horns are aimed at enabling stadia and arenas to focus the sound where it is needed without unnecessarily exciting the reverberant space.
According to the manufacturer, this control combined with its latest 10-inch cone midrange device presents a loudspeaker for large sound reinforcement applications with ‘ultra low distortion and exceptional pattern control’. This, it claims, makes for ‘clear message transmission and intelligible sound’.
The new horns have already been used for some important applications. MST’s maiden outing was on the official music boats of the Flotilla for Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations in 2012. The horns reportedly performed to a very specific requirement of focusing the sound in a ‘stripe’ that passed down the river with the individual boats.
Following this, MST was selected for the Russian Winter Olympics in Sochi in 2014. MST Systems have already been deployed in the Ice Hockey Arena and extensive Bob Sleigh site in Sochi. These two main systems employ a total of 55 MST Horns with numerous smaller speakers for peripheral areas.
Explaining the technology, Funktion One’s Tony Andrews stated: ‘Funktion One has been investigating and developing composite structures since our installation at The Millennium Dome in London. We have achieved a combination of structure and materials which integrate strength, light weight and weather resistance with outstanding acoustic properties.
‘This composite technology has opened the door to manufacturing large waveguide developments of Funktion One’s cone driver loading technique weighing only 60kg,’ continued Mr Andrews. ‘This technology offers the level of directivity control to be expected from a near 2m waveguide. The controlled directivity behaviour of the waveguides allows them to be combined at angles varying between 1 - 22.5-degrees to achieve desired SPL and coverage footprint.’
