Nexo adopts modular approach for flagship touring system

French manufacturer Nexo is replacing its Geo T line array with a new flagship system for touring sound and live events, named Scale Through Modularity (STM).

Described as ‘Nexo’s new proposition for the modern touring and rental company’, STM is based on the idea that the idea that rental companies should only have to buy one loudspeaker system in order to cover a multitude of venues, from small concert halls to stadiums.

The new flagship system is, the manufacturer says, ‘the first scalable modular line array on the market’, combining the functionality of the still popular Alpha cabinets with Geo waveguide designs to deliver a product that can be scaled up or down to suit audiences from 1,000 to 100,000.

That level of scalability is achieved via four discrete loudspeaker elements – the M46 main, B112 bass, S118 sub-bass and M28 omni. Using these four cabinets, users can create a substantial number of array configurations capable of meeting the demands of different venues and events. Possible configurations might comprise hangs of main cabinets only, or main plus bass, or bass plus main plus bass. According to Nexo, the ability to add extra bass cabinets to the system in order to increase power and headroom without introducing unwanted phase anomalies also makes STM unique as the first system to offer scalable LF.

Meanwhile, deploying the S118 sub-bass cabinets, either in the arrays or ground-stacked, increases power for bigger events, while the M28 omni fill speakers complete the desired coverage pattern. Additionally, in another first for Nexo, the main, bass and omni cabinets are injection-moulded.

Another intended benefit of the system’s modular design is that all four elements share a common footprint, being as wide and deep as one another. The result is that STM can be easily packed for transport, with a range of dolly and bumper accessories available to help users prep the system in the warehouse, load it into a truck and then wheel it into a venue. Similarly, the cabinets all share a common rigging system that has been designed to allow a single technician to fly as much as a 72-cabinet arena system from one standing position.

STM is also being supplied ‘road-ready’ – its cabinets are paired with the Nexo Universal Amp Rack, or NUAR, which contains plug-and-play digital patches, real-time system monitoring and control network functionality in addition to two new dual-voltage NXAMP4x4s, each of which can power up to 12 speakers, in groups of three. A new Digital Meter Unit (DMU) has also been included alongside a new Digital Patch Unit (DPU), an intelligent output patch panel.

Finally, for networking, the manufacturer is offering a choice of cards between the EtherSound NXES104 and the NXDT104 Dante. Users will also soon be able to download an iPad and iPhone app named NeMo for the remote control of an NXAMP network.
