Nexo previews new line monitor

French manufacturer Nexo used the Plasa show in London to debut its 45°N-12 monitor loudspeaker, a product the manufacturer describes as a line monitor.

With the new monitor, the manufacturer is aiming to bring the benefits of the line array onto the stage.

The wedge monitor is the first offering from Nexo’s 45°N dedicated monitor series and uses Nexo’s patented third generation Hyperbolic Reflective Wavesource, which is used throughout its GEO range. The design works by wavesourcing, creating virtual acoustic sources behind the enclosure itself and below the stage, using reflection rather than coercion to determine the shape of the wavefront. Unlike a conventional high frequency waveguide in which the exit is rectangular, the monitor’s waveguide forms a ‘smile’, enabling cabinets to be linked together to form arrays without interference between wavefronts and providing musicians and singers on stage with even dispersion where needed.

The N-12 has been designed to produce a defined dispersion pattern and improve level before feedback. The manufacturer reports that this results in lower acoustic power on stage as the sound is focused only where it is needed, and that SPL and frequency response are consistent up to 2.5m.

The 28kg, 392 x 492 x 576mm monitor features a 12-inch, eight ohm Neodymium low frequency driver with a 3-inch voice coil and a 1.4-inch throat Neodymium 16 ohm compression driver on a 22.5 degree hyperboloid reflective wavesource. It has a frequency response of 55Hz to 19kHz ± 3dB, and a usable range at -6dB of 50Hz to 20kHz. The monitor has a nominal sensitivity of 106dB SPL (1W @ 1m) and a nominal peak of 137 to 140dB at 1m for a single unit and 140 to 143dB when two are arrayed.

The monitor has a 30 degree horizontal dispersion angle for high frequencies which increases in 30 degree steps when arrayed and a 22.5 degree diagonal dispersion. On the vertical plane it is 60 degrees and asymmetrical for constant level to 2.5m.

The units are constructed of Baltic Birch Ply and can be used separately or joined together with a magnetic locking system. It has a low-profile design and features a non-slip base with a skid system and handle. The N-12 has two Speakon connectors and four integrated handles. It is aimed at touring or fixed live sound and live TV production.
