Outline Audio debuts CPU-loaded iMode enclosures plus iPad app

Outline Audio has introduced the concept of placing a Linux-based CPU directly into a loudspeaker enclosure with its new iMode system, which is intended to eliminate outboard equipment between the console and power amplifier.
The Linux CPUs used to facilitate the iMode technology incorporate a DSP chip, parameter control software and a web server.
Through the use of DSP and the built-in web server with CGI, Java and other web technologies embedded, users can control a sound system via any standard web browser. The iMode platform is controllable via netbook, smartphone and any internet-enabled device. A dedicated iMode Control app has also been released for iPad or iPad 2 users.
Operating on a Linux operating system with an Outline-customised kernel, iMode sees audio conversion is done at 24-bit/192kHz resolution. Users reportedly have real-time control over a series of parameters, including levels, delay, EQ and shelving filters. The manufacturer states that iMode also allows the user to monitor performance parameters throughout the system, including VU-meters, selected preset parameters, clip and limiter status, amplifier overheating and protection.
A new range of speakers to include the technology is the iSM line of powered stage monitors. The line is the successor to Outline’s HARD series, and features the iSM 112, iSM 115 and iSM 212. The Series is designed for the floor monitoring needs of fixed or touring applications. All cabinets are fitted with eight mounting points, plus two integrated recessed handles. The series reportedly delivers a response of ± 3dB between 76Hz and 15.5kHz, and a phase response of ± 45-degrees between 500Hz and 16kHz.
The iSM 112, a dual-angle wedge featuring a 12-inch woofer and 1.4-inch high frequency driver to deliver up to 132 dB SPL. The internal amplifiers deliver 500W and 270W into the LF and HF sections respectively. The iSM 115 features internal amplifiers that deliver 750W and 400W into the LF and HF sections respectively to yield a maximum SPL of 137dB at 1m. Low frequencies are reproduced by a single 15-inch reflex-loaded, 4-Ohm transducer and the high frequencies are covered by a 1.4-inch throat compression driver fitted with a 2.5-inch titanium diaphragm.
The iSM 212’s internal amplifiers deliver 1,050W and 570W into the LF and HF sections respectively for a maximum SPL of 140dB at 1m. Low frequencies are reproduced by a pair of 12-inch reflex-loaded transducers, with the high frequencies handled by a 1.4-inch throat compression driver fitted with a three-inch titanium diaphragm.
