Redesigned S Series debuts from dbx

Harman brand dbx has redesigned its S Series of graphic equalisers, compressors and crossovers with a range of new launches.

Included is the 231s dual 31-band GEQ; the 215s dual 15-band GEQ; the 131s single 31-band GEQ; the 266xs compressor/gate; the 166xs compressor, limiter and gate; the 234s and 234xs stereo 2-way or mono 3-way/mono 4-way crossover; and the 223s and 223xs stereo 2-way and mono 3-way crossovers.

Described as having been designed ‘to meet the needs of the most demanding sound reinforcement and studio environments’, the 231s, 215s and 131s each offer 1/3-octave constant Q equalisation with switchable boost and cut ranges of ±6dB or ±12dB, plus a ±12dB input gain range. The three models also feature four-segment LED ladder meters, 20mm nonconductive sliders, XLR and ¼-inch TRS ins and outs and a frequency response of 10Hz to 50Hz with a greater than 108dB dynamic range.

Meanwhile, the 266xs and 166xs both feature the manufacturer’s Overeasy compression technology, reportedly smoothing out fluctuating vocal and instrumental levels. Also on board is dbx’s AutoDynamic scalable program-dependent attack and release controls, ‘hard-knee’ compression, and manually adjusted threshold, ratio, attack, release and output gain. New gate-timing algorithms have also been incorporated into the revamped design.

Finally, the 234s/234xs and 223s/223xs crossovers now boast Linkwitz-Riley filters plus independent output gain controls, output phase inversion, a 40Hz low-cut filter, selectable stereo/mono operation and low frequency summing.
