Sommer Cable gets Micro and more
Published: PRODUCTS

The new Micro Stage cable from Sommer is an AES/EBU compliant microphone cable with a wave impedance of 110-ohms. It is intended to cover both on-stage applications and installations in the field, with a compact diameter of just 5.8mm to facilitate use with stereo jack plugs and XLR connectors. It is described by the manufacturer as ‘perfect for use as a patch or Midi cable’.
The Micro Stage’s jacket is cold flexible, reelable and reportedly performs flawlessly in low temperatures down to –30-degrees Celsius. Its capacitance is 48pF (wire/wire) or 120pF (wire/screen), and can thus bridge distances of several hundred metres with virtually no loss. Its screen is made of oxygen-free (99.9999 per cent class N6) copper and has an optical coverage of 95 per cent.
Meanwhile, Hicon – a division of Sommer Cable – has launched a new series of 75-ohm HD-SDI-/3G-SDI-BNC connectors for professional broadcast applications.
Boasting a shell made of brass and beryllium bronze to enable the transmission of 2.970Gbit/s rates and formats up to 2K, the connectors offer a frequency range of 0 to 7.5GHz and also feature a hard gold-plated pin and screen plus a female thread to prevent the cable conductor from slipping out after crimping. The entire plug-in construction is spring-suspended and self-centring for more accurate fitting and contact.
Both cable chassis-mount connectors as well as coloured sleeve supports are available.
Finally, the German manufacturer has also announced a series of new products designed with musicians in mind and using the Cardinal DVM brand name.
Among them is the DVM-194-VCA stereo mixer which has been designed to combine the ‘functionality of an absolutely high-fidelity stereo sub-mixer with the remote controllability of the master level via a standard swell pedal, thus enabling perfect dynamics control in any situation’.
The mixer delivers four stereo channels, one of which also offers a parallel front panel input for an additional source such as a stage keyboard or MP3 player. Each channel also features a tone control. Meanwhile the Master section offers individual level controls for the main and the mono outputs, while the mono out and headphones out are also switchable to PRE-VCA via pushbuttons. The VCA port is used to connect a simple swell pedal (the factory setting for this port covers a control range of -80 to +10dB at 0dB output level). An optional DVM-194-DIS display unit is also available to provide a visual representation of the swell pedal position.
Also new under the Cardinal DVM brand is the purely analogue DVM-120-PBS headphones beltpack system. Intended as a heavy-duty, latency-free personal monitor solution, the DVM-120-PBS uses off-the-shelf microphone cables to connect a central unit to up to four belt-packs, delivering audio and voltage. Features include a stereo input and also an auxiliary sub input. The inputs are electronically balanced and switchable from +4dBu to –10dBV nominal level. Each belt-pack – switchable between stereo, mono or sub-input modes – boasts a high-performance headphone amplifier, a level control, a mute switch, plus balance and tone controls.
