Tannoy extends QFlex performance with largest column yet

Tannoy has launched a new flagship digital beam steering loudspeaker array, the QFlex 64. Extending the performance capabilities of the QFlex range, QFlex 64 takes over from the QFlex 48 as the largest column available.

Tannoy’s QFlex is a range of digitally steerable, self-powered column array loudspeakers aimed at the high performance installation market. The manufacturer claims the range is able to achieve even coverage and sound pressure levels across the full listening plane. By creating an asymmetrical pattern, QFlex can reportedly produce equivalent SPL results in both the near and far field.

The QFlex 64 is now the largest model in the range, with 64 individual drivers each with its own amplification channel and DSP, in a 5.5m column enclosure. According to Tannoy, this new model offers greater low frequency directivity control (down to 110Hz), increased effective range and throw, and greatly improved headroom and SPL.

‘The ability of any steerable column to control directivity versus frequency is proportional to its length,’ explained Philippe Robineau, Tannoy’s director of engineering. ‘Our new QFlex 64 is nearly twice as long as the existing QFlex 48 model. As a result, what a QFlex 48 can do at 200Hz, a QFlex 64 will be able to achieve down at 110Hz.’

The QFlex 64 will also benefit from two on-board steering presets. This new feature for the range will allow users to reconfigure an installed QFlex column to an alternative coverage pattern with the flick of a remote switch (or via third party control). This feature upgrade will be available across all QFlex models shipping from spring.

In a second announcement, Tannoy is introducing a number of EN 54 compliant variants of its existing commercial install products. This announcement will see specific versions of Tannoy’s CVS and DVS Series models being made available which are fully tested for compliance with EN 54 standards. The new EN 54 versions include the in-ceiling CVS 4 Micro, CVS 4, CVS 6, and the wall mounted DVS 4t and the DVS 6t.
