Wohler encourages MADI use in broadcasting

Wohler Technologies has introduced the MADI-8 audio monitor, which utilises the multi-channel audio digital interface (MADI or AES10 standard) protocol, for production and outside broadcasting applications.

The Californian manufacturer claims that the 1RU rack-mountable monitor enables broadcasters to take advantage of MADI support for greater numbers of channels per line and the protocol’s use of coaxial fibre for transmitting audio signals over long distances of up to 3,000m. As a result, workflows are simplified as the cabling infrastructure typically associated with AES audio distribution is no longer required.

In addition to OB vehicle applications, Wohler believes MADI-8 will offer a cost effective solution for houses of worship, such as live and studio recording in addition to broadcasting. Although similar in appearance and operation to Wohler’s VMDA-SUM8 eight-channel A/D monitor, the MADI-8 can be connected in a series within a 64-channel MADI stream for audio monitoring up to eight channels. The monitor features a 16-character by two-line LCD display in addition to coax and optical MADI inputs and outputs, mixed two-channel or mono analogue outputs, integrated speakers, a front headphone jack, channel presence indicators and eight user-nameable presets.

In addition, a series of lower cost Dolby D eight-channel digital audio monitors for decoding AC-3 signals are now shipping. The new monitors, including the AMP1-8DMDA-3G model, were specially designed for operators who do not require Dolby E functions.

Available in 1RU and 2RU configurations, the four multi-channel models in the D-series offer complete monitoring for AC-3, AES/EBU and analogue signal sources. Capable of processing and monitoring up to eight channels from a Dolby Digital bit stream, the monitors cater to two sets of four AES/EBU signal pairs (balanced and unbalanced) or eight balanced analogue channels. Eight high resolution multi-segment tri-colour LED bar graph audio level meters provide accurate visual level monitoring, whilst a high contrast LCD display on the front panel shows the user settings and status, type of signal, channel selection, mute status and phase / correlation.
