AudioForum returns to ISE

WORLD: Italian magazine Connessinoni brought the AudioForum to ISE 2016 for its ninth outing. Held in cooperation with the Audio Engineering Society (AES), the full-day educational programme combined seminars from notable professionals alongside networking and the exchange of ideas, views and business opportunities. This year’s topic was Theories, technologies, legends and myths about audio.

The event was moderated by audio systems designer Guido Diamanti, who began with a presentation on electroacoustic problems and solutions for line arrays. He was joined by K-Array’s project consultant, Daniele Mochi, who outlined the benefits of FIR filtering to manipulate each section of a line array.

Donato Masci, acoustic designer and project consultant at Studio Sound Service, discussed passive acoustic treatment and low frequency absorption in small rooms. Mr Masci dispelled the myth that automatic room calibration tools are useless if a studio already has good acoustic treatment, and conversely, that passive acoustic treatment is unnecessary for rooms with an auto-calibration system. ‘Auto-calibration systems aren't able to solve all of the problems of a room, because they aren't able to manage some of the phenomena that create problems,’ explained Mr Masci. ‘This type of calibration will never replace proper acoustic treatment.’

Afternoon sessions led my Mr Diamanti and Mr Masci looked at how technical aspects of equipment are measured and how to interpret datasheets. This was followed by a presentation from AES board member Mark Devaeminck charting the latest updates for uncompressed audio transport protocols. The one-day programme concluded with an introduction to AES70 from AES life member and senior scientist at Bosch Communications Systems, Jeff Berryman.
