Music Group proposes Coatbridge closure

WORLD: Music Group has announced that it is entering into a period of consultation with its staff at the Tannoy facility in Coatbridge on the outskirts of Glasgow over redundancies and the closure of the manufacturing and office location. If the plans to close the Tannoy headquarters move forward, around 70 staff will be made redundant.

Tannoy was purchased by Music Group in 2015 as part of the acquisition of TC Group. At the time of this initial purchase, it was not clear what plans Music Group had for Tannoy’s Scottish home. Unfortunately, this collective consultation with all affected employees points to the end of Tannoy’s loudspeaker production in Scotland.

Music Group has stated that if the Coatbridge facility is closed, production of Tannoy loudspeakers will be moved to Music Group’s manufacturing plant in Zhongshan, China. The R&D and marketing activities will be relocated to the company’s innovation centre in Manchester alongside its Midas, Turbosound and Klark Teknik brands.

‘Following an extensive evaluation of our operational and financial structure, we have taken the difficult decision to propose that the staff in our Tannoy manufacturing and office facility in Coatbridge are dismissed as redundant, which, if confirmed would see the facility closed,’ explained Music Group SVP, lifestyle and home, Peter Sommer in an announcement to employees. ‘Whilst this is a challenging time, I would like to thank our Tannoy employees for their immense dedication and loyalty over the years, which I feel confident, will not be diminished even as we approach the forthcoming period of collective consultation.’

Music Group states that despite the proposed closure all sales, order and delivery processes will remain unaffected.
