NETHERLANDS: In the centre of the Netherlands city of Utrecht, in the multicultural neighbourhood of Lombok, the biggest mosque in Holland has been built. The Ulu Mosque is unique not only because of its size but also by its location within a five-minute walk from the Utrecht Central Station.
The mosque is open to people of all faiths; there are three levels dedicated to prayer, with a contemplation area for visitors from other religions. There are also offices and educational rooms and a conference room (that can be split dependant on use).
Construction on the mosque began in 2009 and the the start for building this challenging project was given and the €11-million facility, funded by Turkish communities from all over Europe, was completed in 2015. The mosque was designed by architect Ishak Önen with interior design by Semih Irtes from Istanbul.
The multiple spaces presented a number of areas where highly intelligible sound reinforcement was needed, with solutions provided by German firm Pan Acoustics. With direct factory support, Elektro Pamuk, Duisburg, Germany – a specialised mosque sound system installer – employed Pan Acoustics Pan Beam systems to meet the Ulu Mosque’s multifaceted needs. In total, 16 digital steerable Pan Beam systems were installed with simple preset control or sources and settings depending on the usage of the flexible spaces.
In the main prayer area, four Pan Beam PB16 loudspeakers were installed. The first floor prayer area is home to a pair each of PB08 and PB04 Pan Beam models (the PB04s as delays). The splittable conference room uses another pair of PB08 units along with six PB04s.
